Does Camera Gear Truly Matter?

The Best Camera Gear isn’t Necessary. Is My Current Camera Good Enough?

Acquiring new camera gear is a prevalent topic in the photography community. However, influencers and camera brands may be persuading us to upgrade our camera gear before we need to. The cameras, lenses, and accessories we possess are more than enough. The cheapest camera on the market can provide images for print exhibitions and web sharing.

New Camera Equipment Does Improve Some Things, But Not All.

Let’s discuss how what new camera gear can improve. Gaining new photography gear, you’ll get a new sense of motivation. You’ll be inspired to get out and learn about that new camera or how that lens works. Okay, we won’t act as if new camera gear won’t improve your image quality because it will. For instance, a new camera with high megapixels will permit cropping in without the image becoming pixelated. Also, photography lenses can provide more sharpness or perform better in different lighting situations.

Nevertheless, the cons of obtaining new photography gear can be costless, literally and physically. New camera equipment isn’t cheap no matter their brand. Whether it’s Sony, Canon, Nikon, or another, just the cost of a prime lens costs you $800 or more. I have the Sony A7RV, which retails for $3,500. New camera gear will slow you down due to the learning curve. Transferring to another camera brand or a newer camera will take learning the new button patterns and layouts. Also, no matter what camera you upgrade to, each camera has its limits on what it can and can’t do.

What if I Want to Upgrade My Camera Gear?

If you wish to upgrade your camera gears, I’d recommend starting with your lens (Glass). In my time in photography, I witness the biggest improvement in my work from the upgraded lenses. When you upgrade your lens, it won’t slow you down like a new camera body would.  If you’re getting a new camera make sure it is for the correct reason, and I’m telling you this from experience. It will save you from wasting time and money.
