The Photography Editing Process. Do You Need it For Images?

If you’re a photographer who enjoys your photos straight out of the camera, then unedited photos may be great for you. The majority of photographers edit our photos, which is where you’ll learn your editing process. This can be known as your photography style and how you edit your photography. So no, you don’t need to edit your photos, but if you want a certain look to your image then you may wish to.

My Photography Editing Process

As a landscape photographer, I like to edit my images. My images can be described as neutral, which is not too bright or too moody. I won’t go into my actual process of editing a photo, but more of what I plan to do with my images. After culling my images in Photo Mechanic, I import them into Capture One.

When I analyze an image, I want to make sure I make the photo feel as it did the day I took it. Before touching the exposure, I observe which masks I’m going to need and what’s my subject in the image. After doing so, I start with basic adjustment, then color, and then the masks I intend to use. Sharpening and vignette usually is last in my process.

How to Find Your Photography Style?

Your photography style will come to you with repetition. It took me many years to develop my own, and I noticed that it’s not only about the editing process. Your images will, also, look different if you’re shooting in inconsistent weather conditions or trying out unique compositions. I’ve taken many courses by some of my favorite photographers. All of them boiled down to repetition, consistent weather conditions, and working with different techniques in your editing software to get the look you’re after.
